We attract the best. They do their best for you.
At Independent, all our Dental Hygienists are registered and regulated by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, which ensures competent, safe and ethical dental hygiene care. Our Dental Hygienists are qualified to provide preventive, therapeutic and educational services while promoting overall health through the maintenance of optimal oral health. As primary healthcare providers, Dental Hygienists have always been the ones responsible for their patients' oral health. Now they have the opportunity to this independently.
During cleaning they remove calculus, stains and plaque from your teeth and provide you with a polish. While this and our optional whitening treatments give you a more engaging, attractive smile, professional cleaning is much more than cosmetic. It also helps prevent gingivitis, periodontitis and the need for expensive dental surgery. Should we detect any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer or other concerns, we will discuss your treatment plans. If necessary, you will be referred to a dentist for further treatment.
As well as requiring the highest technical abilities, we attract the friendliest, most enthusiastic Dental Hygienists you could ever meet. Happily, that's exactly the type of person who likes to join our team at Independent.
Each of our locations is overseen or operated by the Dental Hygienists themselves and that's the inspiration for the name "Independent."
The first of the Independent Dental Hygiene Centres opened in June 2008 at 2233 Yonge Street in Toronto. The second location opened in October 2008 at 4936 Yonge Street. They have set a unique standard of convenience and professionalism that offers greater access to affordable dental hygiene. Our network will be expanding throughout the Greater Toronto Area and communities across Ontario.
In September of 2007, Ministy of Health of Ontario acknowledged the advanced skills of Dental Hygienists as well as the need to improve public access to oral hygiene and cleaning services. By amending the Ontario Dental Hygiene Act, the government permitted registered Dental Hygienists to clean a patient's teeth without the presence of a dentist.
Legislators were inspired by the overwhelming medical evidence supporting the link between oral health and overall health. Also, many other provinces in Canada had already changed their regulations to accomodate the independent practice of Dental Hygienists.
So the easier the access to proper oral hygiene, the better the health of all Canadians.
