Your teeth say a mouthful about your health. It surprises many people to learn that oral health and overall health are so closely linked. But studies have found that for individuals with periodontal disease:

• Risk of heart disease is 1.5 to 2.7 times greater.
• Risk of stroke is 1.48 to 2.8 times greater.
• Likelihood of giving birth to premature, low birth-weight babies is seven times greater.

There are also proven links between periodontal disease and:

• Respiratory diseases.
• Osteoporosis.
• Increased complications from diabetes.

That's why the Government of Ontario amended the existing legislation to enable Dental Hygienists to perform their services independent of a dentist: so more people have access to better preventive oral care.
