Virtually all of us snore from time to time. In fact, it is quite normal. For some, snoring is no more than an occasional, inconvenient habit; but chronic, heavy, loud snoring can be more serious. Snoring usually occurs when your airway constricts, causing air to be inhaled at an increased speed and pressure, making the soft tissues in the back of your mouth vibrate and produce that loud, annoying sound. Heavy, loud snoring is often a symptom of sleep apnea which is frequently associated with hypertension, stroke and other cardiopulmonary problems.
Clinical trials have shown that an anti-snoring device is ninety percent effective in treating simple snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. In fact many users say they wake up feeling more rested and energetic in the mornings.
An anti-snoring device fits into the mouth much like an orthodontic retainer or sports mouth guard. It is a small comfortable, oral mouthpiece which is worn only during sleep. Impressions will be made of your upper and lower teeth along with a bite registration which will help to determine how far forward to move your jaw. It fits against the teeth of the upper jaw, forcing the lower jaw slightly forward and the mouth slightly open. This keeps the loose or weak muscle tissue at the back of the mouth clear of the pharyngeal airway, promoting the free passage of air. It is possibly the most effective clinical device for reducing snoring and controlling mild to moderate sleep apnea. Before you know it, you’ll be on your way to a more restful night’s sleep!
